Red Kandhari Research and Instructional Livestock Farm

 Objective of the Farm


Objectives

  1.  To impart the basic training to the undergraduate students
  2. Demonstration unit of Red Kandhari cattle and preservation of pure germplasm.
  3. Demonstration unit of Osmanabadi Goat and preservation of pure germplasm.
  4. Demonstration unit of Deccani Sheep and preservation of pure germplasm.
  5. Demonstration unit of Marathwadi Buffalo and preservation of pure germplasm buffalo

Efforts undertaken as per mandate:
    The elite germplasm of Red Kandhari is preserved at RKRI farm by selective breeding. The propagation of this native breed in the breeding tract is carried out by providing the Natural Services of elite breeding bulls kept at farm to RK cows of the surrounding area and also supply of breeding bull to MLDB, State Animal Husbandry Dept, NGO & Private breeders & farmers.


Efforts undertaken as per objective:

             The undergraduate students were provided all facilities for the basic training on livestock as per demands of the various departments of the college. The basic research on production, reproduction, management aspect and breed characteristics were carried out and as a result the Red Kandhari breed is recognized as descript draft purpose breed by department of Animal Husbandry, Ministry of Agriculture, Govt. of India October 1989. The farm is actively involved in research work on various aspects of Red Kandhari cattle breed in collaboration with different departments. The work of draftability of Red Kandhari breed is also been carried out on continuous basis. The Department is involved in preserving and improving the Osmanabadi goat by bringing out improvement by selective breeding and culling. The small unit of the Deccani sheep and Marathwadi buffalo is also established with aim of basic research and production performance.


Objective achieved:

     The farm is always involved in basic training to undergraduate students. The basic research on production, reproduction, management aspect and breed characteristics were carried out on this farm .

Till date, the department has trained 31 post graduate and 04 doctoral students.
